Extrinsic (External) Stains
Extrinsic stains affect the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth. To minimise these stains, regular cleaning and moderation in consuming staining substances is key. When stains occur, whitening treatments can work.
Causes:
- Food & Drinks: Tea, coffee, berries and wine have pigments that stick to the tooth enamel.
- Smoking: Tar in cigarettes causes brownish discolouration.
- Poor Oral Hygiene: Not brushing or flossing regularly allows plaque to build up and discolour.
- Ageing: Over time, enamel thins and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.
