REDUCE JAW MUSCLE STRAIN

Disclusion Time Reduction Therapy

Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) Therapy alters and reduces the time that your teeth are in contact during sideways and front and back movements of your jaw, by making customized, exact, computer-guided adjustments to your bite. This treatment aims to reduce the strain placed on your chewing muscles.

Do I Need DTR Therapy?

Do I Need DTR Therapy?

You may require Disclusion Time Reduction if:

  • Your chewing muscles are hyperactive and strained, and that
  • You are experiencing significant symptoms from this, such as pain and reduction in mouth opening

Overview of DTR Therapy

Overview of DTR Therapy

  • First, your real-time chewing muscle activity and the dynamic movements of your bite and jaw are digitally analysed by a T-scan and Electromyography (EMG). These are then matched and mapped out onto a computer. Any overly engaging areas in your bite and jaw movements that are linked to excessive muscle strain are identified.
  • Following computer-guided recommendations and a clinical analysis by your dentist, customized, minimal adjustments are made to very specific areas on your teeth. This can be in the form of adding a tooth-coloured filling or minimal removal (less than 1 mm) of tooth substance.
  • Finally, measurements will then be retaken as per the initial stage to see if the adjustments have reduced the strain on your chewing muscles or further refinements need to be made.

What Does DTR Therapy Involve?

Stage 1: Consultation

  • At your treatment consultation, your dentist will thoroughly explore your concerns and examine your mouth. Any necessary X-rays, CBCT scans, T-scans and/or EMG will be taken.
  • These are all superficially placed, so you are unlikely to experience any discomfort from any of these. From the findings, your dentist will then discuss with you if DTR therapy or other treatment options are recommended.

Stage 3: Post-Treatment Care

After DTR Therapy, you are likely to detect a change to your bite, which is now likely to feel comfortable. Most patients are able to quickly acclimatize and adapt to this as their normal and healthier bite.

You will be reviewed by your dentist a few weeks after procedure to evaluate your progress.

Stage 2: Disclusion Time Reduction Therapy

  • If DTR therapy is opted for, the procedure will last 30 to 90 minutes depending on the number of areas that require adjustment. It is a painless and minimally invasive procedure, often with no local anaesthetic needed.
