RESTORING YOUR TOOTH

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped covering that restores, protects, and enhances the appearance and function of a damaged tooth.

What is a Dental Crown?

What is a Dental Crown?

The tooth is prepared (shaped) to create space for the crown.  A dental laboratory fabricates the crown based on precise measurements of this preparation.  The crown is then cemented onto your tooth.

Types of Dental Crowns

At Nuffield Dental, we offer a range of crowns to suit your different needs:

Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel crowns are used on children’s baby molars after a pulpotomy or pulpectomy. They help prevent decay and strengthen teeth with compromised structures.

Lithium Disilicate Crowns

These all-ceramic crowns are tooth-colored, offer a very natural look, and are strong and durable.

They can be used for front teeth, premolars, and some molars. Lithium disilicate crowns are an excellent option for patients seeking an aesthetic crown without any metal.

These all-ceramic crowns can be fabricated using CAD/CAM digital technology.

Precious Metal Crowns

Precious metals, such as gold, platinum, palladium, and silver, possess properties ideal for crowns. They are strong, highly durable, long-lasting (with proper care), corrosion-resistant, provide a good fit, and are compatible with adjacent teeth.

The primary drawback for many patients is the metallic color. Therefore, precious metal crowns are typically recommended for back molars where the metal color is less noticeable.

Porcelain-Fused-With-Metal Crowns

These crowns attempt to mask the metal color by fusing a porcelain layer over a metal base, creating a tooth-colored appearance.

This makes them suitable for nearly any tooth, including front teeth. However, they require the removal of more tooth structure than precious metal crowns to accommodate the porcelain. Porcelain is also slightly less durable than metal.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is another all-ceramic crown option. It is tooth-colored, offers moderate aesthetics, and is exceptionally strong and durable.

Zirconia crowns are suitable for patients who prefer metal-free restorations and are typically used for premolars and molars. Like lithium disilicate crowns, they can be made using CAD/CAM digital technology.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are necessary for teeth with:

  • Severe decay
  • Wear
  • Breaks or cracks
  • Developmental anomalies (e.g., underdeveloped or smaller teeth)
  • Cracks that need to be stabilized to prevent further damage
  • Root canal treatment (especially molars)
  • Loss (replaced with dental implants)
  • Undesirable color, shape, or alignment (smile makeover)

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Stage 1: Consultation and Pre-Treatment

The dentist will conduct a consultation, including an examination, pulp tests, and X-rays.

They will determine if a crown or other treatment is necessary and discuss suitable crown types based on your needs and preferences.

Pre-treatment may include:

  • Core fillings for large cavities.
  • Gum contouring to facilitate crown and core filling placement.

Stage 3: Post-Operative Care

You will receive instructions on oral hygiene and crown care. With proper care, a crown can last for many years or even a lifetime.

Stage 2: Crown Procedure

The crown procedure requires two appointments after any necessary pre-treatment. The tooth is prepared and impressions are taken at the first visit, and the crown is fitted at the second.

  • Crown Preparation

Preparing a single tooth for a crown takes 30 to 60 minutes. Local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth (unless you’ve had a root canal), so you’ll typically only feel pressure and/or vibration. General anesthesia or IV sedation may be used based on your concerns and the treatment plan.

Tooth structure is removed to create space for the crown.

An intraoral scan and impression are sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the crown. For porcelain-fused-to-metal or all-ceramic crowns, you will select the desired shade.

A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth until the permanent crown is ready. Avoid chewing sticky or hard foods on the temporary crown.

Contact your dentist if the temporary crown chips or falls off prematurely.

  • Crown Fit

The crown fitting appointment takes 15 to 30 minutes.

The permanent crown is tried on to verify the fit, bite, and color match with adjacent teeth.

Minor adjustments may be needed. The crown is then cemented onto the tooth. Local anesthetic is usually not required for this step.
